Technology Update

Persante Sleep Care is a leader in sleep diagnostics and at the forefront of technology. As part of our continued commitment to protect health information and provide innovative solutions to physicians, we are implementing a new system to facilitate the two-factor authentication required by the FDA for digital signature. This new technology allows using a mobile phone and eliminates the need for the tokens currently being used. It will also provide us an additional method of communicating updates to our technology.

This page will continue to be updated with additional information and key dates as we transition to this new technology over the next few months.

What is Two-Factor Authentication?

Two-Factor Authentication, also known as 2FA, two step verification or TFA (as an acronym), is an extra layer of security that is known as “multi factor authentication”. It requires an additional identifier such as a physical token with numbers or mobile phone in addition to username and password.

FDA Requirement:

The Food and Drug Administration has set criteria for electronic signatures in e-prescribing per 21 CFR Part 11. It defines electronic signatures as entry in the form of a magnetic impulse or other form of computer data compilation of any symbol or series of symbols executed, adopted or authorized by a person to be the legally binding equivalent of the person’s handwritten signature. Section 11.200 requires that electronic signatures that are not based upon biometric scans use at least two distinct identification components.

With standard security procedures (especially online) only requiring a simple username and password, it has become increasingly simple for criminals to gain access to a user’s private data, such as personal and financial details and then use that information to commit fraudulent acts.
